We've known for some time the thrilling revelation that Fede Alvarez, director and writer behind (Don't Breath) is working on a new alien movie backed by 20th Century Studios and franchise founder Ridley Scott. That much is crystal clear.

Yet, up to now, we've only been fed thin slivers of info on the upcoming alien film since that shock announcement. Today, however, production appears to be gathering steam if recent casting reports are to be believed.

According to Deadline sources, "While execs are going through their process on other cast members, Spaeny has been the top choice for the lead role for some time, after several meetings with producers and Alvarez."

In a conversation with Forbes, Ridley Scott essentially ruled out a return to prequel territory - meaning, the realms of Prometheus and Covenant remain unlikely contenders for any story continuation.

"We went down a route to try and reinvent the wheel with Prometheus and Covenant. “Whether or not we go directly back to that is doubtful because Prometheus woke it up very well. But you know, you’re asking fundamental questions like, ‘Has the Alien himself, the facehugger, the chestburster, have they all run out of steam? Do you have to rethink the whole bloody thing and simply use the word to franchise?’ That’s always the fundamental question.”

Though the highly-anticipated alien movie is considered "an original standalone feature" we can expect the series' supreme species (Xenomorph) to frighteningly feature front and center.

For this film, Ridley Scott will step back from behind the lens, instead playing producer under the esteemed director's self-founded production label "Scott Free."

During the pitching process, Alvarez reportedly impressed 20th Century President Steve Asbell with the initial concept, who said, “It was just a really good story with a bunch of characters you haven’t seen before.”

Over the years, the Alien franchise has seen a long line of distinguished directors take the helm, each offering their own unique interpretation of Ridley Scotts' frightening conception.

Hopefully, having produced the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre reboot, Alvarez is now firmly fixated on delivering a new terrifying alien movie on par with past entries.
