Attachment (2023) delivers an engaging, well-acted love story laced with heartwarming moments. Yet, as a horror spectacle, it may leave devoted thrill seekers feeling somewhat shortchanged, despite a compelling folklore premise.
Showcasing decent production values and compelling performances throughout, Shudder exclusive Attachment (2023) cleverly leverages the acting prowess of its star performers while offering a few possession sequences sure to prick the skin.
Despite a largely captivating cast, however, the film's decidedly slow-burn setup may dissuade more acquired horror tastes or viewers seeking something slightly more substantial concerning outright scares. But being content with more distilled blends of horror, Attachment was worth watching until the end.
On the plus side, its layered Jewish roots and intriguing folklorish themes present a strangely mysterious premise outside the typical norm, providing a refreshing take on traditional tropes.
Thankfully, there are some shocking moments for the hardcore horror fan, including a series of disturbingly distorted body horror imagery that tweaks to unsavory degrees. Even so, it is, for the most part, a tame spectacle in the scare department.
Despite some evident lulls and a distinct lack of skin-jumping scares, it's clear that Attachment deserves praise for its quality production values, charismatic cast, and occasionally dislocating imagery.
